Welterbe Grube Messel gGmbH

The Messel Pit is a disused open-cast oil shale mine and has been Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. It offers a unique insight into an ecosystem 47 million years ago, when the extinction of the dinosaurs was followed by explosive changes in the animal and plant world. The museum right on the edge of the pit shows the formation of this important fossil deposit, the living world at that time and the later historical significance of the pit. Numerous fossils from the Eocene period have been recovered from the maar volcanic lake, which was formed 47 million years ago, and new finds are added every year. In addition to the high number and diversity of animal and plant fossils, the unique preservation of full-body skeletons, skin and fur shadows, feathers and stomach contents is also a special feature of the Messel Pit. Changing special exhibitions focus on current research. However, the highlight is probably the excellently preserved fossils, which range from tiny insects to the famous prehistoric horses.

Entry to the mine is only possible as part of a guided tour for an additional charge! The freely accessible outdoor area with its art installations, themed play equipment for children, a viewing platform with a beautiful view into the pit and the bistro also invite you to linger.
